Gorgeous shell necklace from Papua New Guinea made with lumi shells that were once used as currency in the Lumi area of the Torricelli Mountains, West Sepik Province of Papua New Guinea. The "Lumi" are small, disc-shaped rings cut from the large tridacna clam shell. The Lumi was used for bride price payments, death compensations and other exchanges. The rings were often strung together around a central stick for support. The length of the money stick and number of shells, represents the wealth & prestige of its owner. A stunning piece, that is quite heavy. Should be used for decorative display only. Metal stand is included.
