Yaka Mask from Congo
Exceptional vintage Yaka mask from Congo. These masks are used during initiation ceremonies for young boys to signal their progression into adulthood. The masks would be worn on the head of dancers during these pivotal events. The large nose found on Yaka masks and other carved figures is said to point to male fertility, while the shape of the eyes reference the moon and therefore female fertility. These masks are made from wood, dyes and raffia (masks with headdresses).
This Yaka mask shows cracks consistent with its age, but is in incredible condition. It has been mounted on a metal display stand. Amazing collector's item!
Measurements: 33" H x 7" W Stand.
